Nagaur Fair In Rajasthan
The colorful state of Rajasthan is very popular for various fairs and festivals that are celebrated here all around the year. Nagaur festival is one of the most popular festivals of Rajasthan that is celebrated in this amazing state. This festival is celebrated every year in the months of January-Feburary in the beautiful town of Nagaur and attracts travelers form all around the world.
Nagaur Festival is one of the biggest cattle fairs of India. This festival lasts for almost a week and this whole affair is organized by the Government of Rajasthan Animal Husbandry Department. Animals from different parts of India are brought here for buying and selling. About 80,000 farmers come here every year to sell and purchase camels and other cattle. Year by Year the Nagaur festival is becoming popular among the foreign as well as local travelers.
History of Nagaur Festival
Nagur firstly came under the control of Balban in 1292 AD. In 1542 AD Sher Shah Suri captured it. During the rule of Mughal Emperor Akbar many cattle merchants came to his court for his permission to sell their animals. He accepted their requests and gradually from that day onwards the Nagaur festival came into prominence. Breed Bargains At The Nagaur Festival
This fair is well known for its buying and selling of animals. Animals like cows, bullocks, camels and horses are the hottest selling breed of animals in this fair. The bargaining between the owners and the buyers is filled with much fun. The camels in this festival are very high prized and they are given special care to maintain their health. The animals are covered with beautifully decorated clothes so as to attract lots of buyers. They are given high quality grass to maintain their good health. Along with animals their Owners also wear colorful turbans and dresses.
Evening Celebrations At The Nagaur Festival:
After the hectic buying and selling of the cattle throughout the day, in the evening the cattle race is organized to ease the travelers and the buyers. The owners of the animals themselves participate in this race and the winner is given a cash prize. Besides the animal race one can also enjoy watching the bullfights and cockfights. The presence of folk dancers and musicians are the added attractions of this fair. They make the whole atmosphere lively and filled with energy.
Other Attractions at the Nagaur Festival
This festival besides being known for its cattle trade is also famous for the buying and selling of the local handicrafts items. Tourists in this fair can purchase the local hand made dress materials and jewelery. Even the accessories made of iron and leather can also be brought in this fair. Bangles, chunars, mojaris, silver necklaces are very popular among the foreign visitors.
One of the most famous event of Nagaur festival that attracts many tourists is the well known Chilli Market or Mirchi Bazaar. It is the largest chilli market of India and while visiting this place one can see dried chillies every where. These chillies are exported all over the world.
